Body Mass Index or BMI is actually an obesity index.
BMI is derived from the quotient weight/(height)2.
Units: Weight is in Kg and height in m.
According to BMI people are classified in different categories of which the main are cited hereunder.
BMI≤18,5: Underweight
18,5–25 : Normal
25–30 : Overweight
≥30 : Obese (contains different subcategories)
Body Mass Index received strong critiques and from many sides. As all indices it has its drawbacks and limitations.
As far as it regards fit and well trained individuals, BMI has an uppermost disadvantage.
BMI classifies most of these well trained and with very low fat percentages people into the overweight and obese class I categories!!
This seems absurd but actually it is a logical consequence since BMI doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscles mass.
Given that muscle mass is about 18% heavier than that of fat of the same volume, muscular people have a higher BMI than that of the fat and bulky people of the same weight.
To your great health!
