DIET FOR HYPERLIPIDEMIA: A BIG FALLACY
The typical advice on a diet to fight against hyperlipidemia is: cut cholesterol and saturated fats and increase the consumption of complex carbs.
And this without the distinction among different complex carbs.
So, both lettuce and white bread are complex carbs but their impact on lipogenesis is vastly different.
Usually a diet rich in complex carbs is a diet rich in glucose.
Question:
What happens to the glucose (or fructose surplus ) when glycogen stores are full?
Answer:
It is converted into saturated fat and stored in the body for future use.
This invaluable survival mechanism of our ancestors has become a curse for the society of affluence.
Conclusion
When we are talking about a diet to fight against hyperlipidemia , the reduction in consumption of simple or even processed, complex carbs plays the dominant role. These foods cause overproduction of the fat storing insulin.
The recommendation about reduction of bad fats is valid but on no occasion can it solve by itself the problem of hyperlipidemia.
To your great health!
